Chiropractic Cranial Therapy for Infants with Cranial Malformations in Aurora, IL

by

Dr Alorna Dolan of Dolan Family Chiropractic in Aurora is a chiropractic pediatric specialists that treats malformations of the skull resulting from the birthing process using Sacral Occipital Technique (SOT).  She works with some of the top hospitals and specialists in the area treating children of all ages but cranial work is the most common therapy sought after.  Cranial molding occurs during a vaginal birth.  During the molding process, the plates of the cranium overlap as they pass through the birth canal.  Once the head has passed through the birth canal, the bones are supposed to “pop” and reset into the proper position.  Long labors, the use of interventions such as forceps or vacuums, and/or c-sections can impede this natural molding process and may lead to the need of rehabilitation such as chiropractic cranial molding, physical therapy, or in extreme cases, the use of a cranial molding helmet.

At the time of birth, the cranial bones are enveloped in a periosteal sac and separated by connective tissue that becomes sutures.  Because of the presence of the fontanelles and the membranous nature of the sutures, the cranium has an extreme amount of pliability.  This pliability decreases as the infant ages, so as you can imagine, the sooner I see an infant, the quicker and easier the correction is.     As a chiropractor, I have a vast knowledge of the musculoskeletal system, and as a pediatric chiropractor, I have an even better understanding of the relationship of the cranial bones as they articulate with one another.  I am able to guide them into proper positioning with minimal pressure by understanding the direction they move and how they move naturally with respiration.

The chiropractic technique I use when working with an infant’s cranium is called Sacral Occipital Technique (SOT).  With the use of this technique, I obtain about 0.25mm of manual movement of the cranial bones each visit.  The goal of this technique is to obtain optimal position and function of the cranium. My work is extremely precise and gentle when working with the delicate cranium of an infant.  I rarely cause the baby any discomfort and in fact, most parents are amazed at how calm their child is during my treatment.

I understand that many people do not understand the relevance of chiropractic care for children and especially infants.  As you see, I am not attempting to treat a disease. I am only restoring proper shape, balance, function.  If you consider anatomically, physiologically, and biomechanically what I am doing, it is pretty clear that I am simply restoring proper anatomical balance to encourage optimal growth and development in hopes to prevent the use of more drastic interventions such as the use of helmets in the child’s future.   If you have any questions please feel free to contact Dr Alorna by phone at 630-236-3090 or email at dolanfamilychiro@yahoo.com.  You may also visit our website at www.dolanchiro.com.
